Ha!

I think I have conquered the evil vacuum cleaner. I'd checked the hose intake a few weeks ago when I replaced the belt, and it didn't seem to be blocked, so I thought the hose was clear. Continued attempts to vacuum led to just pushing dirt around on the floor, which is not at all effective. So today I disassembled the thing again, and noticed that there *was* stuff at the hose intake. I cleared out the bit that went from near the brush thingy up to where the attachment hose went, and thought that had been the problem, despite having checked it before. Then I happened to look into the end of the attachment hose thingy, and it was all blocked up too. I futzed around pulling out bits of fluff and dust with a long knitting needle for a while, but I could tell that I wasn't getting to the actual block. I couldn't find anything long enough and rigid enough to push through the entire hose to clear the block, so then I had the bright idea of running water through the hose and trying to push the block through that way. And it worked!

I'm waiting for the hose to dry out before I reassemble the thing and try vacuuming again, but I think this may have solved the problem of the vacuum cleaner that refused to suck. :)

Edited to add: Never mind. When I started it up again, despite having picked out all the cat hair and stuff from around the brush thingy, the belt fried. This is the 4th belt in about 6 months. I give up. I'm just going to replace the damned thing.
